Holding forces of single-particle dielectrophoretic traps.
We present experimental results and modeling on the efficacy of dielectrophoresis-based single-particle traps. Dielectrophoretic forces, caused by the interaction of nonuniform electric fields with objects, have been used to make planar quadrupole traps that can trap single beads. A simple experimental protocol was then used to measure how well the traps could hold beads against destabilizing f...
متن کاملTests of Spacetime Symmetry with Particle Traps
Lorentz and CPT symmetry have been tested at high precision in numerous experiments. A general theoretical framework incorporating possible Lorentz and CPT violation in an extension of the standard model of particle physics has been developed. In this framework, analyses of several precision experiments have been performed to find unsuppressed symmetry-violating signals. This paper discusses fe...
متن کاملDielectrophoretic traps for single-particle patterning.
We present a novel microfabricated dielectrophoretic trap designed to pattern large arrays of single cells. Because flowing away untrapped cells is often the rate-limiting step during cell patterning, we designed the trap to be strong enough to hold particles against practical flow rates. We experimentally validated the trap strength by measuring the maximum flow rate that polystyrene beads cou...
متن کاملSingle-particle quantum tunneling in ionic traps
We describe a proposal to probe the quantum tunneling mechanism of an individual ion trapped in a double-well electromagnetic potential. The time-evolution of the probability of fluorescence measurement of the electronic ground state is employed to characterize the single-particle tunneling mechanism. The proposed scheme can be used to implement quantum information devices.
متن کاملCombination Ultrasonic- Dielectrophoretic Particle Traps for Particle Trapping and Sample Purification in a Microfluidic Channel
Ultrasonic and dielectrophoretic particle manipulation have been studied for particle trajectory modification and particle trapping in microfluidic channels. We report an approach that combines dielectrophoresis (DEP) and ultrasonic fields to trap and concentrate particles and cells in an aqueous suspension. By simultaneously applying electric and ultrasonic fields to the sample, the favorable ...
